Memory and Invention (Online) November 2022: an imaginative approach to the portrait

Course Description:
This course builds on the techniques covered in ‘The Portrait in Clay from Photos’. We’ll be making closely observed but highly subjective portraits in clay. The choice of subject is up to you. But you will need to find photos to work from as well as one or two other 2D sources, such as paintings, drawings or even photos of sculpted portraits.
I will be working alongside you every step of the way. I’ll be choosing an artist as my subject – someone well documented by photographs, but also by self-portraits in two or three dimensions. You are welcome to use the same formula for your selection. I think there will be something quite special about re-interpreting an artist’s own depiction of themselves.
This is a chance to give free rein to your imagination and to be as experimental as you wish. But even freestyle working needs to be anchored by sound methodology. The course will also cover the fundamentals of observation, measurement, and anatomy, to help you make a convincing portrait in clay – wherever your imagination might take you.
Experience Level:
The course is designed for students with some previous experience in observational modelling in clay. It will be helpful but not essential to have completed one of my previous online courses. For those who are new to my courses, I will do a brief but thorough re-cap of all the basic techniques I use to codify 2D information for portrait sculpture.
The Online Space:
The course includes a balance of screen time and time working individually with access to one-to-one advice. It also includes access to an information hub and group gallery as well as a group review 2-3 weeks after the end of the course, by arrangement.
I will provide comprehensive course notes well in advance to assist with preparation. And you’ll need to set aside some time to get ready for working from your home or studio.
